13 undergraduate students, 2 graduate students participated in an Education Abroad trip to the Bahamas during Winter Intersession. The trip was led by Director Lisa Park Boush. The students’ blog is available here: www.uconngeoscience.blogspot.com

I’ve never written a blog post before, figured I’d start it off with a TL;DR for those of you who don’t want to put up with my insane ramblings. I’m Greg! I graduated from college recently with a BS in Geoscience, and before that attended a high school that focused in aquaculture (we built boats in Tech and went sailing for PE. I’m from Connecticut if you couldn’t tell.) Now I’ve been given the amazing opportunity to be a Rural Aquaculture Promotion volunteer in the Peace Corps!

“Death on the playa: geochemistry and geobiology of dolomite formation at Deep Springs Lake, CA”

David Jones is an Assistant Professor of Geology at Amherst College with broad interests in Earth History.  He uses stratigraphy and geochemistry to address questions about the co-evolution of life and Earth’s surface environments in deep time.  His most recent research focuses on sedimentary rocks in the Great Basin (Nevada and Utah) and modern playa lake deposits in California (Deep Springs Lake).

Dr. Michael Hren receives award from American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund

Profile_hren.jpgMichael Hren was awarded $110,000 from the American Chemical Society – Petroleum Research Fund for a proposal entitled “Evaluating the Preservation Potential of Buried Organic Carbon: A Laboratory and Field Study of the Impact of Burial Diagenesis on Stable Isotopic and Organic Molecular Records”. The proposed research will focus on understanding how the distribution and stable isotopic composition of organic molecular biomarkers change during the process of burial diagenesis and has direct implications for petroleum research and paleoclimate reconstructions.

GSCI 4999 (3 credits)

Learn about geology, geography, biology and sustainability in a natural laboratory!

This course will examine all aspects of this carbonate island systems, including its bedrock geology, hydrology, karst and cave systems, coral reefs, inland lakes, beach and coastal geomorphology, biology, archaeology, climate history and its future environmental sustainability. Students will learn about the impacts of sea level and climate change as well as human settlement on this small island.

  1. EARTH’S DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT (LECTURE)

Three credits. Three class periods. Not open for credit to students who have passed GSCI 1010, 1050, 1055, or 1070. Students who complete both GSCI 1051 and 1052 may request that GSCI 1051 be converted to a CA 3 Laboratory course. Origin and history of planet Earth, emphasizing how rock, air, water, and life interact at different scales to produce the earth’s crust, landforms, life systems, natural resources, catastrophes, and climatic regimes. Provides a scientific context for human-induced global change. CA 3.  M-F 9:00 – 12:15

  1. EARTH’S DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT (LABORATORY)

One credit. Prerequisite or co-requisite: GSCI 1010 or GSCI 1051 or GSCI 1055 or GSCI 1070. Not open to students who have passed GSCI 1050. Students who complete both GSCI 1052 and one of GSCI 1010, 1051, 1055 or 1070 may request that the prerequisite be converted to a CA 3 Laboratory course. Laboratory complement to GSCI 1010, 1051, 1055, and 1070, . Provides an opportunity to work with specimens (minerals, fossils, rocks), terrain images, maps, physical models, and simulation experiments. Includes local field trips. A fee of $10 is charged for this course.  M-F 1:00 – 4:15pm

Geoscience Policy Internship

Be a Geoscience Policy Intern with the American Geosciences Institute! The Geoscience Policy Program represents the geoscience community in Washington DC, and actively works with Congress and federal agencies to foster sound public policy in areas that affect geoscientists, including water, energy, and mineral resources; geologic hazards, environmental protection, and federal funding for geoscience research and education.

AGI seeks outstanding geoscience or geo-related engineering students (undergraduate or Masters) with a strong interest in federal science policy. Interns will hone their writing and web publishing skills while gaining first-hand understanding of the legislative process and executive branch agencies.

You must be a U.S. citizen and enrolled in, or recently completed, a geoscience or geo-related eningeering bachelor’s or master’s degree program to apply.

The internship will last 12 weeks, and the starting date will be based on the schedule of the successful applicant.
